MEN'S ITA SCHOLAR ATHLETES WOMEN'S ITA SCHOLAR ATHLETES
TEMPE, Ariz. (SMU/ITA) – The SMU men's and women's tennis teams were named a 2019 All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday, while 11 Mustangs earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.
Representing SMU men's tennis, seven Mustangs were selected as Scholar Athletes including four freshman,
Huntley Allen,
Andrew Buhelos,
Blaise Fagan and
Avery Pennywell. Senior
Rory Samuels was selected for the second consecutive season while
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and
Carles Sarrio were selected for the first time.
On the women's side, four Mustangs were honored including
Ana Perez-Lopez who is now a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete.
Vivienne Kulicke was also selected for the third time after earning the honors at UTEP. Sophomore
Emma Pieroni along with freshman
Katherine Jakeway rounded out the Mustang honors.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2017 and spring 2018).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
