Aug 31

Box Score DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team came out on the short end of a thrilling, five-set match Saturday, losing to Stephen F. Austin in the championship match of the SMU DoubleTree Invitational in Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs forced a fifth set with a 25-18 victory in the fourth. SMU used the momentum to take an 8-3 lead into the break to switch sides. SFA used a timeout to extend the break and scored the next four points, cutting the lead to one. Five serves later, the score was tied, 10-10. SMU maintained the advantage, however, taking a 13-12 lead, but the Ladyjacks scored the last three points of the match, winning 15-13.

Rachel Woulfe led SMU with 18 kills, while Hannah Jacobs scored 16 to reach double figures in each of the first three matches. The pair of sophomores each earned all-tournament honors. Montana Watts was also honored, earing Best Libero accolades after averaging a tournament-best 5.36 digs per set.

SMU plays in the Carolina Classic, hosted by Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs will face East Tennessee State, Coastal Carolina and South Carolina State in the tournament.
