DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's basketball lost on a last-second shot to Tulane, 67-66, on Wednesday at Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs (7-9, 1-3) held a tight two-point lead with 5.6 seconds to play before Tulane was able to move the ball up the floor with a timeout. Krystal Freeman hit a three with less than a second left on the clock to win the game. Tulane stayed perfect in an American Athletic Conference play with their fifth consecutive win overall.
Five Mustangs scored in double figures on the night.
Paige Bayliss registered her second double-double and collected a career high 15 boards.
Johnasia Cash recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
SMU jumped on top of Tulane early with a 14-5 lead behind strong starts from Bayliss and
JaQuia White, who both had six points in the period.
After Tulane (9-8, 4-0) found its first lead of the game early in the second quarter the Mustangs put together a 10-0 run to shoot back ahead by nine. SMU took a four-point lead into the halftime locker room.
The Mustangs held Tulane to just three buckets in the third behind a noteworthy defensive performance. SMU was able to push the lead all the way to 16 by the end of the third.
Tulane came roaring back in the fourth quarter bringing the game to a tie with 1:24 to play.
Reagan Bradley responded with two clutch free throws with 1:09 left. After empty possessions on both ends, Tulane had the ball looking for a go-ahead bucket. Cash rejected the Green Wave attempt and collected the rebound with six seconds remaining. With SMU unable to knock down the free throws, Tulane was able to advance the ball up the floor with a timeout to set up the game-winning possession.
Both
Amber Bacon and Bradley finished with four assists and double-figuring scoring.
Kayla White came off the bench to chip in 10 points. Along with her double-double, Cash had a career high four steals.
The Green Wave were led by Krystal Freeman, who scored 30 points including four threes.
Next up, the Mustangs travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers. The game is set for Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tip from Roane Fieldhouse.
