DALLAS (SMU) - SMU Men's Tennis swept the season-opening doubleheader against Prairie View without dropping a set on Thursday at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday as No. 2 Texas and Northern Colorado head into Dallas to take on SMU. The matches are set for 10 pm and 2 pm.
Opening up against Prairie View for the second-consecutive season, the Mustangs rolled in their morning match with a dominant performance.
Huntley Allen and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky combined for the doubles win on line one. Prairie View played with five players for both matches. All five Mustangs won their singles matches in two sets.
It was more of the same for the Mustangs in the second match.
Avery Pennywell teamed with
Ethan Leon to earn the doubles point before another singles romp.
Gardiner Perotti cruised to the quickest 40-minutes victory, dropping just one game. Five of 10 sets in the match finished 6-1 or better. Altogether, the Mustang combined to win 22 sets, without losing one or needing a tiebreaker.
Several Mustangs earned their first collegiate dual match singles win on the day including,
Ethan Leon,
Jordi Redelijk and
Kyle Pham.
Juan Jose Bianchi made his first appearance playing an unfinished doubles match with
Carles Sarrio. The duo was up 5-4 at the time of clinch.
NEXT UP: The Mustangs await Northern Colorado and Texas on Saturday for another day of action at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs faced both teams last year with SMU falling 6-1 against then No. 8 Texas.
Carles Sarrio earned a marquee win in the match knocking off top 10 ranked Christian Sigsgaard at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin. Texas is one of two top ten teams set to visit the SMU Tennis Complex with SMU and Columbia slated for a matchup later in the year.
The Mustangs faced Northern Colorado at home in 2019 suffering a tough 4-3 defeat in the early game of a double-header.
