PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Freshman Peter Smithson was named the American Athletic Conference Diver of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday.

Smithson helped lead the Mustangs to diving sweeps in meets against West Virginia and UIW in competitions on Jan. 17 and 18.

In the meet against West Virginia, Smithson secured the victory on 3 meter with a six-round 340.20, before coming in second to teammate Parker Hardigree on 1 meter. Against UIW, Smithson posted a personal-best 348.08 to win 1 meter and placed second on 3 meter.

Smithson has four wins on 1 meter this season, a pair on 3 meter and one on platform. He has also achieved the NCAA Zone qualifying score in all three events this season and will compete at the Zone D Championships at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center March 9-11.

This is the second weekly honor for Smithson, having first won on Nov. 26 following a standout performance at the SMU Invitational.

The Mustangs are back in action Friday when they travel to College Station to take on No. 5 Texas A&M. Events begin at 6 p.m. Live results will be available via SMUMustangs.com and the Meet Mobile App.
