The SMU women's swimming and diving team is set for the four-day American Athletic Conference Championships starting Wednesday. The event will be held at the CRWC Natatorium on the University of Houston campus.

The Field

The American women's field features six teams – Cincinnati, Connecticut, ECU, Houston, SMU and Tulane. Houston has won the last three conference championships dating back to the 2017 season, the Mustangs won back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016 and Louisville won in its only season in the league (2014).

All-Conference Returners

The 2019 American Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Performer, Erin Trahan, returns for the Mustangs in 2020. Trahan won the 50 free, 100 fly and 200 fly in 2019, bringing her individual all-conference total to six. She also has eight relay honors to her name.

Olivia Grossklaus also has an individual all-conference honor to her name on the swimming side, while divers Katie Crown (2x), Johanna Holloway (1x) and Taylor Ohlhauser (1x) have each earned all-league honors. Crown also has an individual championship on her resume, a win on 1 meter in 2019.

In relay action, Gabi Grobler has four accolades and Sam Smith has two.

Championship History

SMU has 32 individual and 15 relay championships through six seasons in The American. Six of those championships have come in the 100 fly, where the Mustangs have never been defeated. Erin Trahan has wins in 2018 and 2019 and Marne Erasmus swept the event from 2014-17.

SMU currently holds nine American Championship records.

Against The Competition

Erin Trahan leads the conference in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, meeting the NCAA B standard in both events. SMU also holds five top-three times in championship events, which also includes Trahan in the 50 free (2nd), Felicia Anderson in the 100 back (2nd) and Gabi Grobler in the 200 back (3rd). The Mustangs also have 15 times that rank inside the top eight of events.

SMU ranks second in each of the relays except for the 800 free, which is third.

Academic Excellence

The Mustangs were recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All-America Team for their fall semester GPA. To earn Scholar All-America team honors, programs must achieve a 3.0 grade-point-average during the previous semester. SMU posted a 3.47 GPA, an improvement from last fall's 3.39 mark.
