Mustangs Post Three Runner-Up Finishes On AAC Night Two

HOUSTON (SMU) – Nicole Stambo and Erin Trahan led Mustang individuals with runner-up performances, while the 200-yard freestyle relay secured a second place finish on night two of the American Athletic Conference Championships.

After the second night of action, Houston leads the team standings at 388.5 points with SMU in second at 279.5. Cincinnati (212) is third, ECU (183) fourth, Tulane (149) fifth and Connecticut sixth (133).

Stambo was the second diver to make the podium this week as all four Mustangs made the Championship Final for the second consecutive event of the Championships. The freshman posted a career-best, NCAA mark of 289.55 for second place.

Two more Mustangs stayed above the NCAA Zone mark with Katie Crown finishing fourth at 277.00 and Taylor Ohlhauser finishing sixth at 270.35. Johanna Holloway rounded out the group by finishing eight with a 264.10.

SMU picked up its second individual runner-up honor from Trahan, who earned her third consecutive all-conference honor in the 50-yard freestyle with a finish of 22.91. Sam Smith (23.30) joined Trahan in the A Final and picked up seventh place points for the Mustangs.

Felicia Anderson (23.30) improved four spots from her prelim performance to finish 12th overall in the 50 free.

Gabi Grobler matched her career-best time of 1:59.41 in the 200-yard individual medley to stay under the NCAA B standard and finish fifth in the Championship Final, while Janelle Gursoy also had an impressive race in the event, posting her own personal-best 2:01.25 to win the Consolation Final.

Gursoy's was one of two Consolation wins for SMU on the night. Frederica Kizek opened the night with her own career-mark to win the 500-yard freestyle Consols in an NCAA B cut time of 4:46.71. Olivia Grossklaus (4:52.69) also scored in the final, finishing 12th overall.

The night closed with Trahan, Smith, Grobler and Anderson turning in a 1:31.23 for second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Friday prelims begin at 10 a.m. CT and finals follow at 6 p.m. The schedule features the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard medley relay.
