Three SMU Men’s Golfers Among Leaders In Palmer Cup Rankings

Feb 21

NORMAN, Okla. – SMU's Noah Goodwin, Justin Thompson and Mac Meissner rank among the United States' top collegiate golfers in the latest Arnold Palmer Cup rankings. The top six golfers from the final ranking are automatically selected to the United States' 12-member team at the Arnold Palmer Cup, hosted by Lahinch (Ireland) Golf Club July 3-5.

Goodwin checks in at second to lead the Mustang trio, followed by Thompson in seventh and Meissner at 12th. SMU is the only school to have three players rank among the top-25 men in the United States—and joins No. 1 Pepperdine as the only schools to place two-or-more golfers in the top 15.

Goodwin leads the team with a 69.83 scoring average, and has finished top-10 in all four events he has competed this season. Thompson has four top-15 finishes to his name with an average score of 70.93. Meissner has shot par-or-better 11 times in 15 rounds this season, and is averaging 70.53 strokes per round.

The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla. in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. The Arnold Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses including The Old Course, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course, and Cherry Hills.

Six committee selections per side (three men and three women) will be announced March 4 during the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. The next Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking will be announced March 5.

The Mustangs return to action March 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nevada, playing at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, hosted by UNLV.
