Men's Golf Finishes Third At Southwestern Invitational

Jan 27

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.- SMU men's golf team finished third at the Southwestern Invitational, as three Mustangs finished in the top 20 in a field that featured four ranked teams and five others receiving votes.

The Mustangs shot a 13-over 301 in the final round at North Ranch Country Club, with SMU closing to within three strokes of the tournament lead down the stretch. SMU finished with an 18-over 882, as San Diego State won the event with a 10-over 874.

"It was a very tough day, as it was extremely windy and cold with tough pins," head coach Chris Parra said. "We had a couple of guys get off to rough starts, but I am proud of the way they fought back to make a comeback. We know what we need to work on before our next tournaments."

Noah Goodwin checked in with his top finish since winning at the Maridoe Intercollegiate in October 2019, tying for fourth at even par. Goodwin used 75 strokes to get around the par 72 / 6,992-yard course in the final round, and was one of just six players in the field to finish 54 holes at par-or-better. Goodwin has now finished in the top-10 in five of his last six events, dating back to 2019.

Mac Meissner showed incredible resiliency to post the Mustangs' low score of the day, a 2-over 74. Meissner was +7 through his first three holes on Wednesday, then played his next 15 holes at a bogey-free -5. His strong finish vaulted him to a tie for seventh with a 1-over 217, his 13th career top-10 finish.

Nathan Petronzio collected a top-20 in his first collegiate tournament, shooting a 7-over 223 to tie for 18th. On Wednesday, Petronzio shot a 5-over 77, notching his first career eagle on the par-5 6th, joining Goodwin as Mustangs to eagle a hole in the final round. The '3' helped SMU shoot a combined 31-under on par-5s during the week.

All five Mustangs finished the day even with or better than the field's third-round average score of 77. Ollie Osborne shot a 3-over 75 to tie for 32nd with an 11-over 227, and Justin Thompson finished with a 5-over 77 to tie for 42nd at 14-over 230.

The Mustangs return to action Saturday, facing TCU in a match play event at Vaquero Country Club in Westlake, Texas. The event is closed to the general public.
