SMU track & field heads to Houston to open the 2021 Indoor season at the H-Town SpeedCity Series on Friday, Jan. 29.
Â
The action begins from Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse with field events at 10 a.m. followed by running events at 12:30 p.m. The field includes a large contingent of fellow AAC programs and UTSA.
Â
The Mustangs are coming off a 2020 season cut short due to the coronavirus. SMU finished fourth at the American Indoor Championships in 2020. The Mustangs took home three golds and five total medals at the AACs in 2020 including one gold by returning junior Chika Iwuamadi in the 400m and another by the 4x400 team of Ashton Woods, Whitney Williams, Annette Bolomboy and Iwuamadi. The 2021 Mustangs have four of the top 10 fastest 400m runners in school history on the roster.Â
Â
Iwuamadi returns as the SMU record holder in the 400m Indoor, a record she set back in her freshman season and improved upon in her sophomore season.
Â
Chelsea Francis is back as one of the most decorated sprinters in program history. Francis has made two trips to the NCAA Indoors in the 60m including last season where she posted the nation's third best time (7.17), 0.13 seconds faster than the next quickest in SMU history. She also holds the school's second fastest time in the 200m and was a part of the second fastest 4x400 team. She was the first SMU sprinter to qualify for multiple NCAA Indoor Championships.
Â
Other returning Mustangs that posted top-75 marks in the nation last season include Atipa Mabonga in the triple jump and Olivia Witt in the Pentathlon. Witt earned a bronze with her performance at the AAC Indoors.
Â
The meet will be streamed on Houston's Track and Field Facebook and live stats will be available here.
Â
The Mustangs are slated to return to Houston for another version of the H-Town Speed City Series on Saturday Feb. 13.
