Mustangs Compete At Arturo Barrios Invitational On Saturday

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs will return to competition this Saturday at Texas A&M for the Arturo Barrios Meet. The women's 6K will begin at 9:45 a.m. on the Watts Cross Country Course. This is the fourth and final competition before the team will compete at the American Conference Championship hosted by USF at the end of the month in Tampa.
The Mustangs have had a strong start to their regular season. They began the season with a second-place finish at the same course they will be back on this weekend at Texas A&M. Two of the three Mustangs in the first top-10 are newcomers to the Hilltop: Steffi Jones in second and Cayla Eckenroth in 10th with second-year Kaitlyn Gearin placed seventh.
Eckenroth took the field at the UTA Gerald Richey and led the team to a first-place win at their second meet. All of the ten SMU runners competing placed in the top 20 at the meet.
Gearin took the lead for the team in the next meet of the season – becoming the third different Mustang to lead in three races. She placed 30th out of 153 competitors at the Cowboy Jamboree in Oklahoma. The team placed seventh in a field of 15 schools.
Heading into the final regular season meet, SMU is ranked ninth in the South Central Region, which is three spots above fellow American Conference Competitor, Houston. Facing the Cougars and top teams within the South Central Region this weekend, the Mustangs will have a glimpse of what lies before them at Regionals. 37 teams will be in competition this Saturday.
"Arturo Barrios has the potential to be an impactful competition," Head Coach A' Havahla Haynes said. "We will go head-to-head with the top teams in the South Central Region and nationally. The team placement has potential to provide at-large points to the NCAA championships. With three weeks of solid, uninterrupted training in, everyone is excited for Saturday."
