ITA Regional: Neff, Chakravarthi Reach Round of 16; Neff-Thamma Make Doubles Quarterfinal

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) – Adam Neff and Caleb Chakravarthi each won two matches to make the round of 16 at the ITA Regional this weekend. Neff and Ivan Thamma knocked off the No. 4 seeded doubles duo from Baylor en route to the quarterfinals.
After earning a bye, Neff and Thamma won their round of 32 matchup before topping the No. 4 seed Jacob Brumm and Tadeas Paroulek from Baylor 8-5 to reach the quarterfinal. The Mustang pair then faced the No. 5 seed Cleeve Harper and Richard Ciamarra from Texas, falling 8-4.
Neff also took home two singles wins in the regional. He opened with a win against Stefan Storch of Texas A&M 6-3,2-6,6-2. Neff followed that with a straight sets win in the round of 32 over Ethan Muza from Baylor 6-4,7-6(6). before dropping the round of 16 match to No. 43 and fourth-seeded Sander Jong (TCU) 6-1,7-5.
Caleb Chakravarthi won two singles matches as well. He opened with a straight sets win in the round of 64, defeating Anish Sriniketh (Texas A&M) 6-4,6-4. Chakravarthi then dominated Trinity Grear from Rice 6-2,6-1 to reach the round of 16. He would go on to have a three-set match with the No. 2 seed Pedro Vives Marcos (TCU) 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Sophomores Liam Krall and Julian Steinhausen both made good runs in the consolation bracket, winning two matches apiece and advancing to the quarterfinal. Jordi Redelijk won three matches in consolation play to reach the semifinal, where he met teammate Ivan Thamma who was victorious in four.
"Our players all got tremendous playing time and reps to see how they matched up with the rest of the state," said head coach Grant Chen. "Our region is so strong and so deep that we knew this was going to be a physical and mental test.
"Adam and Ivan did a great job in doubles, upsetting No. 4 seed to reach the quarterfinals of doubles. Adam and Caleb each advanced to the round of 16 in the strong singles field, winning two matches each. Jordi had a breakthrough tournament, playing high level tennis to win two matches in qualifying, testing the No. 2 seed and following that up with several wins in the consolation bracket. All in all, I'm pleased with our progress and look forward to focusing on some specific aspects of our players' game in preparation for the final four tournaments of the fall season."
The Mustangs are back in action at the Islander Invite hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi Oct. 22-24.
