DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team wrapped up night one of action at the SMU Classic on Friday. The two-day event is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
The altered format event features eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day, and events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1 and 3 meter.
Valentina Becerra posted an NCAA B Cut in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the Mustangs in the event. The junior covered the distance in 53.36 to finish third in the field. This is the first career NCAA cut for Becerra and makes her the ninth fastest performer all time in the program.
Olivia Grossklaus also found success in the event, clocking a personal best of her own at 54.85 for third in the Consolation Final.
The 400-yard individual medley pairing of
Ilektra Lebl and
Jenna Watson had notable showings for the Mustangs. Lebl led the duo with a third-place finish in the event, just off the NCAA B standard at 4:17.40, while Watson posted a career best 4:21.33 in the Consolation Final. Lebl's time is good for the 10th best performer all-time at SMU.
Gabi Grobler led the team in the 100-yard backstroke with a personal best 54.13, which also improves on her program all-time, top-10 time in the event.
Alex Stevens also touched in a career time of 57.25.
On the diving side,
Nicole Stambo finished third on 1 meter with a six-round 264.95 to pick up valuable points for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs sit tied for fifth in the team standings with 112 points. Michigan leads the field at 174, with Louisville second (172) and Missouri third (137).
