DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team is in first place after night one of the three-day SMU Invitational held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
SMU sits atop the team standings with 362 points, while Drury (246) and Fresno State (193) round out the top three. Hawaii has 174 points and TCU, which is only competing in diving events, has 42 points. The Mustangs won six of seven events on the first night of action.
Nicole Stambo took the top spot on 1 meter with a six-round 285.75. The junior registered a career-best 309.55 in prelims to advance atop the group. The score kept her above the NCAA Zone qualifying mark. Teammate
Jaclynn Fowler also posted an NCAA Zone score in prelims (286.70), her first of the season.
The 500-yard freestyle saw
Ilektra Lebl (4:45.10) post a Meet Record and NCAA B cut, and become the ninth fastest performer all-time at SMU.
Gabi Grobler stayed under the B standard with her 200-yard individual medley win, covering the distance in a meet-record time of 1:59.18, and
Valentina Becerra (54.38) continued her run with a win in the 100-yard butterfly.
Johanna Gudmundsdottir was the Mustangs' top finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, placing second in a career-best 22.77.
In relay action, Gudmundsdottir,
Indra Vandenbussche,
Alex Stevens and
Tiffanie Ruan clocked a 1:31.31 meet record to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, while Grobler,
Maddy Lewis, Becerra and Vandenbussche combined for a 3:39.90 meet record in the 400-yard medley relay to win.
Action resumes Friday with the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay, 800 free relay and 3 meter.
