SMU Falls To Memphis 3-1 On Wednesday

Memphis, Tenn. – SMU fell to Memphis 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 30-28) on Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs gathered 20 block assists, led by Kaylyn Winkler who finished with six, followed by Hannah Jacobs with five. Jadyn Bauss and Zairyn Hemsley both notched double-doubles on the day, as Bauss tied Bria' Merchant for a team-high 18 digs.

Angel Jones notched her first career block assist in the match. Jacobs led SMU offensively with 14 kills, while Rachel Woulfe added 13. Hemsley dished out 47 assists from the setter role. Winkler registered her 200th career block assist on the day.

Memphis began the match with a 4-1 lead. SMU came back to tie the match up at four after two kills by Bauss on a 3-0 rally. Down the stretch, neither team had a larger lead than two. Tied at 21, SMU used a 4-0 scoring rally capped off by an ace by Merchant to take the set victory.

Similar to the first matchup between these two teams back in September, neither team was able to pull away early. This set saw 11 total ties, but Memphis jumped ahead 24-19 with 6-0 scoring run to take all of the momentum. SMU had a kill by Winkler, but the Tigers were able to knot the match up 1-1.

Memphis took a 15-11 advantage in the third set. The Mustangs found a rally to tie the set up at 17 after a block assists by Jacobs. SMU went up by two (19-17) but the Tigers scratched back to set up a 21-21 score. A couple of SMU errors and a kill by Gigi Crescenzo helped lift Memphis to a 2-1 lead.

It took extra points to determine the fourth set. SMU jumped out to a 7-3 advantage, but Memphis closed the lead to 7-6 after a timely kill by Crescenzo. The Tigers eventually went in front 16-14, but both teams battled for the lead down the stretch trading points. After a 23-23 tie, Woulfe used a big swing to put SMU up and within arm's reach of set point. Memphis fought back to eliminate the deficit and regain the lead (25-24).

The Mustangs had three more set point opportunities, but the home team did not go down easy. The Tigers had two kills by Tabytha Toelke to claim the American Athletic Conference victory.

Toelke finished with 16 kills, while Bailey Houlihan notched 27 digs to lead the Tigers.
