SMU Wins 75-63 Against UMKC To Start Head Coach Toyelle Wilson's Tenure

DALLAS (SMU) – The Toyelle Wilson era started on a high note as the SMU women's basketball team defeated Missouri-Kansas City 75-63 in Moody Coliseum Tuesday afternoon.

In her first season as head coach on the Hilltop, Wilson added six transfers and two freshmen to a squad of seven returning letterwinners. Danielle Sanderlin, a transfer from UMass, led all scorers with 20 points. Florida State transfer Savannah Wilkinson posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Leading by five, 34-29, at halftime, the Mustangs used the third quarter to ensure their new coach would have a stress-free fourth quarter en route to her first win at SMU. Rice transfers Sydne Wiggins, eight points, and Jasmine Smith, six points, accounted for nearly half of SMU's 30 points in the quarter. With 10 minutes left to play, the Mustangs led by 18, 64-46.

SMU shot 48% from the field and held UMKC to just eight 3-pointers in 22 attempts. Kayla White, a starter for the last three seasons, finished with nine points. Wiggins finished with 15 points, second on the team. The Mustangs made five 3-pointers, with three by Wiggins and two by Smith.

The Mustangs continue the homestand Sunday against Oklahoma State at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
