Men’s Tennis Gear Up For Stacked Spring Schedule

Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU among headline matchups
DALLAS – Head Coach Grant Chen and the SMU Men's Tennis program look to make a national splash in 2022 as they take on many of the best teams across the country. Of the Mustangs' 24 opponents this spring, 14 competed in last year's National Championship tournament. Four guaranteed, five if SMU faces Wake Forest, were ranked in the top 10 in the nation at that time. SMU's strong schedule will display a number of eye-catching showdowns including home matches vs Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU. The Mustangs will also hit the road to faceoff with Baylor, Texas A&M, and UCF.
Following a strong fall season, Chen and his team have high expectations leading up to their opening match against Prairie View A&M on January 13th. This home contest will set the Mustangs off and into a busy opening month. A mid-January matchup in Waco against the 2021 National Championship runner-up Baylor Bears stands out in the early going.
As mid-season approaches, a number of important matches emerge on the schedule. Weekend home contests vs Texas Tech, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Oklahoma State, and South Florida will be important tests for SMU's experienced roster.
Respective March and April AAC rivalry matches against TCU and Memphis are expected to bring big turnouts to SMU's beautiful Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex. The complex will also be host to the ATP Tour's Dallas Open February 6-13, which Senior Caleb Chakravarthi will be competing in.
"We have a fantastic Schedule ahead of us," stated Chen, "We will play everyone in the deep American Athletic Conference and many of the top programs in the state of Texas. AAC had six teams ranked in the top 50 last season and Texas had four teams in the top 10. This spring season will give our players a true indicator of where we stand on the national level. We look to have one feature match each month with the best fan experience; Texas Tech in January, Texas A&M Corpus Christi in February, Oklahoma State in March, and Rice in April. Other premier home matches include TCU, Memphis, South Florida, and Purdue. There were so many positives and firsts in 2021, and we look to build on that and take another step. With the deepest team and most experienced team we have had in years, we are excited to see what 2022 has in store."
SMU's strong roster is led by the experience and poise of captains Chakravarthi and Jordi Redelijk. Redshirt sophomore Julian Steinhausen is expected to be a serious contributor, as well as 2021 AAC Freshman of the year, Liam Krall.
