BOX SCORE SEASON STATS CHEN POSTGAME INTERVIEW
DALLAS (SMU) – The 50
th-ranked Mustangs defeated No. 35 San Diego, 4-1, on Thursday at the SMU Tennis Complex for their second ranked win of the season.
The Mustangs won their conference-leading 11
th match of the season behind another strong doubles performance and singles wins from
Liam Krall,
Clarke Wilson and
Jordi Redelijk.
Huntley Allen and
Julian Steinhausen started the match with a solid, 6-4 win on line three doubles followed by Krall and
Caleb Chakravarthi winning, 6-4 on line two.
Tomas Vaise and
Juan Jose Bianchi were leading 6-5 when the match was clinched. The doubles victory gave the Mustangs a doubles-point victory in each of their last three matches against ranked teams (No. 24 Oklahoma, No. 30 Tulane, No. 35 San Diego).
San Diego jumped out to wide leads on half the courts as singles play began, looking to take the edge in the match. The Mustangs were able to find first-set wins from Redelijk, Wilson and Krall. Momentum began to turn as Vaise and Chakravarthi turned around their sets. Vaise trailed 1-5 in the first before winning six games in a row to take the first set. Chakravarthi was in a 1-4 hole before working the set to a tiebreaker. The Toreros would win the tiebreaker.
Krall earned his ninth singles win of the season, 6-3, 6-3 on court, moving the score to 2-0 SMU. Shortly after, Wilson won his fifth-consecutive match with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court five.
San Diego cracked the scoreboard as Sacchitt Sharrma won the second set and the match against Steinhausen, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
In need of one court to clinch the win, Redelijk led 6-4, 5-6 with his opponent serving on court six. The sophomore turned the lights out on the Toreros, breaking his opponent and locking in the Mustang win.
At the time of clinch, Chakravarthi was 5-7, 3-3 on court one while Vaise led, 7-5, 4-4 on court three.
The 50
th-ranked Mustangs move to 9-2 on their home court this season. They wrap up the homestand on Friday at 3 p.m. against Lamar.
