Mustangs Drop Tough 2-1 Contest At Tulsa

BOX SCORE

TULSA, Okla. (SMU)
– No. 22 SMU dropped a heartbreaker to No. 25 Tulsa, 2-1, on Saturday night at Hurricane Stadium.

The Mustangs (4-3-0, 4-3-0 AAC) found multiple chances, but couldn't get any to stick as the Golden Hurricane (5-1-1, 5-1-1 AAC) got two past SMU's Cole Johnson for the conference win.

SMU held control of the ball for most of the first 15 minutes and had the first chance of the game in the ninth minute when Papa Ndoye sent the ball just over the top of the crossbar.

Tulsa's Alex Meinhard, who scored both of the Golden Hurricane's goals, put his first shot in the back of the net in the 20th minute for an early lead. Ndoye had the equalizer in the 35th minute with a header into the top of the goal, but it was erased after an offside call.

Keeper Cole Johnson went on to tally three saves throughout the first half to keep Tulsa to one heading into halftime.

The Mustangs came out of the break in full force and had early chances when Nick Taylor's shot went wide of the goal and Timo Hummrich's shot was saved by Tulsa. SMU was thwarted by a second offside call in the 63rd minute that again wiped the equalizer off the board.

Gabriel Costa finally tallied the equalizer for the Mustangs in the 76th minute after a Mustang throw in bounced to his feet outside the top of the box. Costa's shot flew past Tulsa's keeper for the goal.

Meinhard scored the game-winner for Tulsa in the 81st minute. SMU worked to try and tie the game at two, but couldn't put one past the Golden Hurricane.

Up next, the Mustangs face UCF for the second time this season. The match in Orlando will be streamed on ESPN+ and is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
