HOUSTON (SMU) - SMU women's tennis defeated Houston, 4-2, on the road to improve to 7-1 against fellow American Athletic Conference opponents this season.

"Gritty win from the team today," said head coach Jeff Nevolo "We knew Houston was tough and with it being our third match in four days we really had to dig deep in the heat. Very proud of this group. They fought like crazy all weekend and took matches when it mattered."

The Mustangs wrapped up their two-game road swing with wins over Rice and Houston during their trip to Houston. SMU started the match by winning a lengthy doubles point. Winslow Huth and Nicole Petchey won 6-1 on line three and Hadley Doyle and Jackie Nylander lost 7-5 on court one. Chandler Carter and Claudia Bartolome went into a tiebreaker to decide the point. The breaker lasted 22 points before the Mustangs won, 12-10.

In singles, the Mustangs won matches on lines one, two and five. Nylander's quick two-set win ended, 6-0, 6-2. Petchey won with a pair of 6-1 sets on five. Doyle won her first set 6-4 before winning the clincher in the breaker 7-6 (6).

The Cougars earned wins over Carter on line four and Huth on line three. Bartolome was in the midst of a third set on line five when the match was called.

The win gave the Mustangs a 19-8 record heading into the final match of the regular season. The Cougars lost for just the sixth time this season. SMU heads to Denton on April 17 for a match with North Texas.
