FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) - SMU women's tennis defeated No. 50 TCU, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Tennis Center.
With the rivalry match all square at 3-3,
Winslow Huth won the final court, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match and notch the Mustangs their first ranked win of the season. The victory marked the Mustangs' first win over TCU since 2011.
"Great to come out of Fort Worth with the victory," said head coach
Jeff Nevolo. "Awesome effort from Winslow, down a set and 3-0, to come back and get the win. She has been working very hard on a number of things and it paid off today. Big match on Sunday vs Tulsa at home. On to the next one."
SMU started the match with a victory over the Horned Frogs in doubles.
Jackie Nylander and
Hadley Doyle lost 6-1 on line one before
Claudia Bartolome and
Chandler Carter evened it up with a 6-4 win on two. Huth and
Nicole Petchey put the Mustangs in front thanks to a 6-3 win on court three.
TCU gained a slight advantage in the match after winning four of six first sets in singles.
Bartolome won her first set, 6-2, on line five and moved the score to 2-0 SMU after a 6-2 second set. Petchey took her first set, 6-2, and cruised to a 6-1 victory in set two.
Within one point of clinch at 3-0, the Mustangs dropped a few more sets as the Horned Frogs began to climb back into the match. No. 90 Marie Norris defeated Nylander, 6-4, 6-4, on line one and
Hadley Doyle lost, 7-5, 6-4, to No. 82 Mercedes Aristegui on line two.
With the Mustangs up 3-2, all eyes were on the final two remaining courts. After dropping her first set in a tiebreaker, Carter lost set two, 6-4, to put the match at 3-3 with one court left.
Huth lost her first set, 6-2, and found herself down in a 0-3 hole in set two. The freshman battled her way out to take set two, 6-4, and set up a decisive set three where Huth would clinch the dramatic victory.
The victory moved the Mustangs to 16-8 on the season with their 12
th win in the last 14 matches. The match also earned the Mustangs their second win on the road win against TCU in the last 25 seasons and snapped TCU's seven-match winning streak in the all-time series.
The Mustangs return home for another ranked matchup on Sunday. The 48
th-ranked Mustangs battle No. 49 Tulsa at 1 p.m.
