Rowing Concludes Regular Season At Longhorn Invitational On Saturday

No. 14 SMU will travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday, April 24 at Walter E. Long Lake. The Mustangs will take on No. 2 Texas, No. 10 Alabama, (RV) Notre Dame, (RV) Tulsa, Oklahoma, and (Division II No. 1) Central Oklahoma.

2V8+ - Winners and next fastest time to A Final (3 boat final), remainder to B Final
2V4+ and 3V8+ - Top 2 to A Final, remainder to B Final
LAST TIME OUT
SMU last scrimmaged against No. 2 Texas on March 27 and 28 at White Rock Lake. Prior to that exhibition, the Mustangs competed in the Cardinal Invitational on March 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. SMU swept every boat vs. No. 12 Wisconsin, RV Notre Dame, and RV Louisville. The Mustangs hung with No. 3 Michigan in each race, including only a two second loss to the Wolverines in the First Varsity Eight.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
No. 2 Texas won all four races against (at the time) No. 7 Michigan on April 10. This has been the only competition for the Longhorns besides two scrimmages against No. 14 SMU.
No. 10 Alabama has taken part in five events this season. The Crimson Tide raced in the Big 10 Invitational April 17-18. Alabama came away with four victories winning the Varsity 8 + and the Varsity 4 + boats twice. Wisconsin, Louisville, Iowa, Tennessee, and Minnesota all were involved in the invitational.
(RV) Notre Dame has been involved in the Cardinal Invitational and the Big Ten Invitational this season, as well as a dual against Louisville. The Irish won four of five boats versus Louisville in their dual. In the Big Ten Invitational Notre Dame picked up a victory in the Second Varsity Eight, and second place finishes from the Varsity Four, Third Varsity Four, and the Third Varsity Eight.
(RV) Tulsa took on Alabama, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Clemson in the Cardinal Invitational on March 13. The Golden Hurricane took second in the Varsity 8 + with a time of 6:24.687 ahead of Minnesota and took second place in four other races. The Golden Hurricane faced Central Oklahoma and Kansas State last weekend, gathering a first-place finish over Kansas State in the 2V8+ for its only win that day.
Oklahoma scrimmaged Kansas State to begin the season. The Sooners then competed in a dual against Kansas on March 27. Oklahoma is coming off two second placed finishes against Clemson and North Carolina last weekend.
No. 1 (Division II) Central Oklahoma began the season in Seattle, Washington competing against Seattle Pacific and Western Washington. The Bronchos won two Varsity 8 races and one Varsity 4 race. UCO is coming off a win after taking down Kansas State and Tulsa in the Varsity 8 race with a time of 7:30.91 last Saturday. The Bronchos came in third in the 2V4 race against the same two teams.

The Mustangs' Varsity 8 competed at the Cardinal Invite March 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and picked up victories over No. 13 Wisconsin and a pair of squads receiving votes in the Pocock USRowing/CRCA Poll, Notre Dame and Louisville. On Saturday morning, SMU defeated Notre Dame by almost six seconds, 6:24.4 to 6:30.1, before just crossing the line ahead of Wisconsin in the afternoon, 6:20.0 to 6:20.4. On Sunday, the Mustangs outpaced Louisville by over 20 seconds, 6:25.0 to 6:46.4.

SMU opened the 2021 season by coming in the Pocock USRowing/CRCA preseason rankings at No. 20. The Mustangs have since moved their way up to No. 14 in the latest rankings.

SMU will gear up for the American Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday, May 16 held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
