SMU's First Varsity Eight Named AAC Boat of the Year

IRVING, Texas – SMU's Varsity Eight was named the American Athletic Conference Boat of the Year, becoming the second crew in program history to earn the league's top honor.
The crew consisting of coxswain Colleen Gillis, Jasmine Brake, Victoria Franklin, Madison van Meel, Juliet Traylor, Peyton Matthews, Daisy Butterworth, Megan Hewison, and Colombe De Rouvroy won the program's first conference championship.
The V8 went into the NCAA Championships at No. 10, which was the highest seed in the event in The American's history. This crew later won the C/D Semifinal by two seconds and finished the regatta 13th overall after winning the C Final.
SMU took down No. 8 Iowa, (RV) Notre Dame, No. 12 Wisconsin, (RV) Louisville, and No. 10 Alabama throughout the season. The Mustangs later beat UCF to grab the conference championship crown.
The 1V8 boasted multiple all-conference award winners, as Traylor, Van Meel, Brake, De Rouvroy, and Gillis were named First Team All-Conference. SMU's coaching staff, led by head coach Kim Cupini was named the American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
