SMU track & field begins competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday with two Mustang individuals and one relay team set to compete at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
The SMU 4x400 squad qualified for the NCAA Championships as just the second SMU outdoor relay team to earn an NCAA spot and the first 4x400 team to do so. The squad finished in 10th at the NCAA West Prelims with a time of 3:34.05, breaking the program record the team set back at the AAC Outdoor Championships. The team's record is six seconds faster than any other in SMU history.
Â
The 4x400 team consists of Ashton Woods, Whitney Williams, Annette Bolomboy and Chika Iwuamadi. Woods, who also qualified in the 400 hurdles, runs leg one for the Mustangs. Williams earned an NCAA spot on the relay team in her first collegiate outdoor season. Bolomboy, a senior, joined the Mustangs in 2020 and has earned All-AAC at both of the conference championships she's participated in. In her third season on the Hilltop, Iwuamadi, the Mustang anchor leg, holds every 400m flat record at SMU (4x400 indoor, 4x400 outdoor, 400m indoor, 400m outdoor). She was the Most Outstanding Performer at the last AAC Indoor Championship.
Â
Along with her qualification in the 4x400 relay, Woods secured a spot in Eugene in the 400 hurdles. She broke the school record in the event four times during the season. During her time at SMU, Woods set program records in three events and eight top-10 marks. She is the first Mustang to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 400 hurdles.
Â
In her first year with the Mustangs, senior transfer Jernaya Sharp punched her ticket to Eugene in the 100 hurdles. Sharp broke the 33-year old school record back at the AAC Championships with a time of 13.18. She ran a 13.22 in the prelim finals to earn her spot in Eugene. Sharp joins Woods as the first Mustangs to qualify for the NCAA Championships in a hurdles event.
Â
Action gets underway on Thursday with the 100 hurdles at 6:32 C.T. / 4:32 P.T followed by the 400 hurdles at 7:30 C.T. / 5:30 P.T. and the 4x400 relay at 8:48 C.T. / 6:48 P.T. In each of the three Mustang events, the top two in each heat plus the next two best times will qualify for the finals on Saturday.
