DALLAS (SMU) - No. 8 SMU scored two second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over UIW on Monday night at Washburne Track and Soccer Stadium. The Mustangs recorded their first shutout of the season in the victory.
Jose Ortiz and
Gabriel Costa each had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs (3-0-2), who earned their fifth win over the Cardinals (1-4-1) in program history.
Costa scored his sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 59
th minute. The tally came shortly after he assisted on a goal scored by
Jose Ortiz in the 53
rd. Ortiz headed in Costa's perfectly-placed volley to bring SMU's total to two (
video).
Roman Knox got the Mustangs in the board in the 25
th minute (
video). Ortiz redirected a
Lane Warrington throw-in to Knox for a tap-in goal. Warrington picked up his second assist of the season while Knox got his first goal of the year and Ortiz tallied his first point of the 2021 campaign.
The Mustangs outshot UIW (1-4-1) 23-3 in for the game.
Cole Johnson recorded the shutout in goal for SMU.
Head coach
Kevin Hudson played 22 Mustangs in the final non-conference match. SMU's non-league slate included a 3-1 win over then-No. 8 Stanford, a 1-1 tie with No. 23 Saint Louis and a 1-1 draw with a Denver team that was receiving votes in the top 25.
The Mustangs open American Athletic Conference play with a road game at Temple on Saturday and a home game versus USF on Friday, September 24.
