DALLAS (SMU) – No. 18 SMU earned its first American Athletic Conference win of the season in its conference opener over Temple by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night at the Temple Sports Complex.
The Mustangs (4-0-2, 1-0-0 AAC) out-shot the Owls (1-2-2, 0-1-0 AAC) by a total of 15-8 and tallied 10 shots on goal compared to Temple's three.
Papa Ndoye scored the first SMU goal of the night as he connected with a pass from
Gabriel Costa during the 21
st minute to put the good guys up 1-0.
Harvey Castro tallied the second score in the 26
th minute when he chipped the ball over Temple keeper Liam Cummings' head to give SMU a 2-0 lead, which held until the team went into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Temple made it a one-goal game in the 60
th minute when Nigel Griffith slipped a score past
Cole Johnson thanks to an assist from Mike Eijgandaal.
SMU responded in the 81
st minute of play when
Jose Ortiz tallied his second goal of the week as a shot off his left foot found the bottom center of the goal for a 3-1 lead.
Ndoye scored his second of the night in the 89
th minute when he found a pass from Costa and slipped the ball past the Owl keeper to put the insurance goal into the center of the net, giving SMU a 4-1 advantage.
Johnson finished the contest with two saves as the Mustang backline helped hold the Owls off the Mustangs' half of the pitch for a majority of the contest.
SMU returns to Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Sept. 24 as they face the USF Bulls starting at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
