DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs traveled to Tulsa this week to take on the 2022 American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship on Friday, October 28th. The Mustangs are competing for a win tomorrow morning to take home the championship title. Â
"The entire season has been about progress and learning how to compete in different situations amidst the chaos," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The competition schedule was tough but intended to lead us toward a few goals: improve our team position from AACs last year, have returning individuals improve or match their overall position from AACs last year, and finally put the team in the position to be competitive with the front of the overall team results come championship season."Â
SMU returns last year's AAC Freshman of the Year award winner Kaitlyn Gearin who placed second last year along with senior Maddie Hulcy who was 14th in 2021. SMU newcomer and graduate transfer Alanis Robineau-Fauvey will plan to stick with Gearin and Hulcy tomorrow as they look to lead the charge for SMU.Â
Other returners from last year's fourth place finishing team include Mia Olsen, Jessie Crowley, Kendall Saeger, and Leoni Mierswa. Senior Lior Kremer, Sophomore Nikoleta Rafailaki, and Freshman Macey Hilton will also compete for a team of nine runners.Â
"The women have been focused, process-oriented and have improved every week to this point," Haynes said. "The hope is to keep it rolling Friday and into November!"Â
The race begins at 9:15 a.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
