BYRAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) - SMU athletes recorded four top-10 finishes and five personal bests even as just 11 Mustangs took on the strong field at Texas A&M on Saturday.
"There were some missed opportunities and some missteps," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "All things you try to avoid like false starts or making a move on the curve but, with high level of competition, these things can get the best of us."
Chika Iwuamadi made her debut for the season in the 800. She ran a time of 2:24.03 -- a personal best. Mackenzie Montandon also ran her fastest time to date in the 800 with a 2:19.66 race. Montandon's race improved on her previous PR set earlier this season by nearly four seconds. Madison Savoy led the Mustangs in the 800 with a time of 2:18.84.
"I'm really happy with the race and excited to see what else I can do the rest of indoor season," Montandon said. "I'm hoping to set myself up well for outdoor as well."
Emily Waller posted a personal best of 58.39 in the 400 meter race – more than two seconds faster than her season opener. Whitney Williams didn't have the race she had hoped for, but she said she knows what to fix for the next meet. She ran a time of 55.25 for ninth place.
"It wasn't my best showing, but I know what needs to be done to improve my time," Williams said. "I'm excited to run next weekend and execute properly."
Freshman Maria Kavalierou represented the field athletes on the Mustang PR list this weekend in the Long Jump with a jump of 5.39 meters. Raelyn Roberson placed fifth in the field with a jump of 5.69 meters – short of the 20 feet she was aiming for.
"It wasn't what I had hoped for," Roberson said. "I will use this meet as a learning opportunity for the next."
The Mustangs will be back in action next weekend at Texas Tech and Vanderbilt for another opportunity to better their times and standings within the conference.
"The women have been putting in the work, and we have Texas Tech and Vanderbilt to look forward to next weekend," Haynes said.
