FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – The No. 5-seed SMU women's basketball team was eliminated from the American Athletic Conference Championship in the semifinals by top-seed and regular-season champion No. 25/24 UCF at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Wednesday night.
The Knights, the nation's leading scoring defense, defeated SMU 61-28 in what was the first meeting between the two programs in two seasons. SMU canceled the 2020-21 season after six games and the regular-season contest for the 2021-22 season was canceled due to Covid-19 protocols within the SMU program.
SMU finished the regular season and conference tournament with a 14-14 record under first-year head coach Toyelle Wilson, who led the Mustangs to a tournament win for the first time since 2017. Savannah Wilkinson and Kayla White each earned All-American Athletic Conference honors, and Wilkinson ranks in the top 30 in the nation with 13 double-doubles. The Mustangs will await the announcement of the NCAA and WNIT brackets Sunday.
