BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (SMU) – The SMU men's golf team closed its opening day at the American Men's Golf Championship in second place, totaling six under through the first round. The Mustangs trail first-place Houston by four strokes (-10), and lead third-place South Florida by four (-2).

Sophomore Nathan Petronzio leads the 45-player field carding a four-under 68 through day one. Petronzio hit a clean sheet through the front nine, including three birdies, along with a one-under showing after the turn, claiming three more birdies on the day. Petronzio's six birdies was the highest figure of the field.
The sophomore also topped the leaderboard on par fours with a two-under (3.80 avg.). Petronzio, Ollie Osborne, and Noah Goodwin each hit three-under on par fives, all tying the low figure on par five holes through the round.

Osborne closed round one tied for sixth, carding a two-under 70. Hitting par-or better through 16 holes, including two birdies and the hole-16 eagle. A one-under on par threes for Osborne was the second-lowest of the field, just one stroke back from the top mark and tying Goodwin.

Goodwin finished day one tied for twelfth at one-under after carding an unblemished three-under through the front nine.

SMU leads the field at Southern Hills' four par five holes, totaling 11-under as a team (4.45 avg.). The figure was aided by a hole-16 eagle for Osborne, who was just one of six to players to earn one through the first round.

As a team, the Mustangs put up the second lowest performance of the field on par threes, hitting a one-under (2.95 avg) through four par three tees.

Holden Wisener is set to begin the second round for SMU on Friday, teeing off at hole one at 8:40 a.m. CT. with the remainder of the Mustang lineup starting every ten minutes after.
