SMU will head to Texas A&M this weekend for the final meet of the regular season in 2022. With the American Athletic Conference Championships only a few weeks away, this is the last chance for the Mustangs to individually punch their ticket to Wichita State by making it into the top-20 rankings within the conference.Â
Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said this meet will provide the team with great competition from the West Preliminary and a few of their conference rivals.Â
"This weekend is a tune-up providing opportunity for final adjustments in preparation, approach and mental focus," Haynes said. Â
Raelyn Roberson holds one of SMU's 27 Top-20 conference marks in the long jump. She heads into this final meet in third place with her jump of 6.15 meters from the Byran Clay Invitational.Â
"I performed well at the last meet, so I just want to continue that momentum into this upcoming meet," Roberson said. "Stay consistent and improve is the goal."Â
Maddie Hulcy is seventh in the conference for the 10k race with three of her teammates currently qualified to travel to the meet in that event as well. She is also eligible in the 5k and is feeling confident in her conference standings.Â
"The distance program has made really great strides over our last two meets across the board," Hulcy said. "I saw significant PRs in San Francisco in the 5k and at Azusa in the 10k, so I feel confident in my conference standings. For our last regular season meet at A&M, I'm just looking to repeat my successful race plan in the 5k and drop some time over the last mile."Â
Sophomore Mackenzie Montandon said she is headed into this last meet looking to have a good, strong, and technically sound race.Â
"I'm trying not to focus too much on specific times I want to hit and rather have a race I can be proud of because I executed it the best I could," Montandon said.Â
Hulcy said she is excited about how far the team has come this season.Â
"I think we are in a really good place going into conference," Hulcy said.Â
