The Mustangs are headed to Wichita State this weekend to compete in the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Mustangs are coming off several meets full of personal best performances and feeling ready and prepared to take on the championship competition. Â
"Nearly the entire roster has put down new personal bests over the course of this 2022 Outdoor season," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The difficulty with a good performance is to continue to be consistent at those new personal bests. This team has found that new level of consistency."Â
Whitney Williams achieved a personal best in the 400 at the last regular season meet at Texas A&M with a time of 54.05. The time currently has her placed at sixth in the conference, and her goal is to PR yet again.Â
"My goal is to run 53-second 400 this weekend," Williams said. "I feel prepared, and I'm very confident that I'll do well. I'm just ready to run fast this weekend and, hopefully, score some points for my team and come back home with some hardware."Â
Williams will also be a part of SMU's 4x400, which is currently ranked sixth in The American.Â
Long Jumpers Funminiyi Olajide and Raelyn Roberson are currently ranked in second and third and will aim to make the podium this weekend to bring points in for the team.Â
"My goal is to PR," Olajide said.Â
Roberson will compete in both the long jump and the 100 this weekend.Â
"For long jump, I just want to continue the momentum and consistency I've had the past two meets and improve," Roberson said. "I'd also like to score and medal this time around. For the 100, I'd like to improve my time as well."Â
Roberson said she is feeling great headed into the meet.Â
"We've had some great training sessions since Texas A&M, and I'm going into conference feeling confident in what I can do," Roberson said. "I'm excited to just go out there and give it my all. I'm also super excited to watch how the team does. Everyone has been putting the work in all season, and it's always great to see my teammates' hard work pay off."Â
Kaitlyn Gearin will also look to bring home some hardware in both of her events – the 5k and the 10k – this weekend.Â
"I would love to place in the top three in both events and score as many points as possible for the team," Gearin said. "I am feeling fit going into the weekend. All of the girls have been putting in a lot of work, and I am excited to see it pay off in our performances this weekend!"Â
Senior Steffi Jones is looking to do all she can to help her team and advance into the next round of post season competition. She is currently ranked fourth in the 1500 and 16th in the 800.Â
"My goal is to qualify for regionals in the 1500 and then, once I secure that, score as many points as I can for my team," Jones said. "I'm very excited. The pressure is on, but these are the last seconds of my track career and I'm going to make them count!"Â
Action begins at noon on Friday.Â
"I am excited about this group, and they are ready to fight for points in our event areas," Haynes said.Â
