The SMU Mustangs closed out their 2022 season at the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville. Four athletes qualified and competed on Thursday, narrowly missing out on finals and a shot at the NCAA Championships.
"We closed out our season just shy of having a qualifier to the NCAA Finals," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said.
Funminiyi Olajide and Raelyn Roberson kicked off the meet for the Mustangs in the long jump. Olajide jumped 6.22 meters and placed 13th – only spot away from qualifying. Roberson placed 17th with 6.15 meters.
"This group was capable of advancing to the next round and ultimately finals," Haynes said. "Raelyn and Funminiyi narrowly missed out on advancing. Both of them had the NCAA Finals on their radar, and I know they have it within them in the coming years."
Senior Steffi Jones competed as a Mustang for the last time on the track in 1500. She ran a time of 4:24.36. After having Covid last week, she said she was pretty happy with her performance so quickly after recovering.
"Overall, I think the team was pretty bummed about the results, but these are the kind of losses that make you ready to come back faster and stronger," Jones said.
Whitney Williams ran a time of 54.52 seconds in her final 400 of the 2022 season. She placed 36th in the field.
"Whitney, Raelyn, and Funminiyi all return next year with experience and as leaders," Haynes said.
