DALLAS – The Mustangs have announced the addition of Jack Winkler, a 6-foot 2-inch graduate transfer from Michigan State. Winkler played the No. 1 singles spot for the Spartans last season, earned All-Big Ten honors, and received the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. He aims to get his Master of Finance degree through SMU's Cox School of Business.
Â
Head Coach Grant Chen shared, "I am excited to announce that ITA National Most Improved Senior and N4A Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award Winner, Jackson Winkler has decided to complete his collegiate tennis career at SMU after a very successful five seasons at Michigan State. Jack's tennis resume is impressive having played No. 1 singles for the Spartans, and we know he will help our program climb. It is his off-court perseverance and tenacity which I knew made him a great fit for the 'Stangs. He has overcome tremendous hurdles and we know that mindset will continue on the Hilltop."
Â
Throughout his final season at Michigan State, Winkler accumulated 10 singles and 7 doubles victories. Nine of his 10 singles wins came on the No. 1 line. Originally from Birmingham, Michigan, he played high school tennis at Brother Rice. Coming out of high school, he was the 71st ranked player in the country, second ranked player in Michigan, and was a two-time All-State selection.
Â
Excited for the opportunity to join the Mustangs, Winkler added, "I'm very honored and grateful to be able to play my last year of tennis at SMU. I'm looking forward to getting to the Hilltop and doing everything I can to help the team accomplish our goals this year!"
Â
Winkler joins the Mustangs' already announced transfers of Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo from USF and Blaine Hovenier from UCLA.
