Mustangs Announce 2022-23 Signing Class

DALLAS (SMU) -- Head women's swimming and diving coach Steve Collins has announced the addition of 10 student-athletes to the program for the 2022-23 season.

The Mustangs are coming off a runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships in 2022 that saw four individuals win seven events and two relays take top honors. In all, eight individuals and all five relays combined for a total of 19 all-conference accolades. Eight student-athletes earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors, while the team was recognized in both the fall and spring for their academic achievements.

The 2022-23 signing class includes student-athletes from three different countries and four different states across the U.S.

Anne Lauren Bellah | Maryville, Tennessee | Maryville | Backstroke/Freestyle/IM

Prep: A four-year letterwinner under Jenna Johnson at Maryville High School… Was a four-time State qualifier… Earned NISCA All-America honors in 2021 and 2022… A Knox Sports Awards nominee in 2021 and 2022… Swam for Tim Bauer at Tennessee Aquatics… A Futures qualifier (2020-22)… Member of the National Honor Society.

Personal: Daughter of Elisabeth and Eric Bellah... Has one sister, Gracie.

Avery Fuhr | Spring, Texas | Klein Oak | Breaststroke/Sprint Freestyle

Prep: A three-year letterwinner under Kyle Subda at Klein Oak High School… Program record holder in the 100 breast, 200 free relay and 400 free relay… State qualifier in the 100 breast, 200 free relay and 400 free relay in 2022… Helped team to a district championship in 2022… Named Academic All-State (2022)… Swam for Mike McCauley at Premier Aquatics Club of Klein… Futures qualifier… National Team Captain (2021-22)… An International Baccalaureate Graduate… Graduated Magna Cum Laude… Member of the National Honor Society… Earned Scholastic Writing Awards in 2021 (silver key), 2020 (1 gold, 2 silver) and 2019 (silver).

Personal: Daughter of Deana Fuhr.

Jimena Leguizamon Leal | Bogota, Colombia | Maria Inmaculada School Colombia | Backstroke/IM

Prep: Competed at South American, Pan American and World Championships… Was a South American Champion and earned silver at Junior Pan Ams… Became the first Colombian swimmer to make a semifinal at the FINA World Championships (2022)… Won gold in the 200 back and 4x100 medley relay at the 2022 Bolivarian Games, also won bronze in the 100 back and 200 IM.

Personal: Daughter of Zulma Leal.

Hannah Lockyer | Danville, California | Monte Vista | Breaststroke/IM

Prep: Lettered four years under Lauren Braswell at Monte Vista High School… Helped team to a 2019 NCS Championship… Earned the Coaches Award…. Graduated with honors… Also competed for Joe Natina at Crow Canyon Country Club.

Personal: Daughter of Naomi and Kent Lockyer… Father played basketball at UTSA.

Lucrezia Napoletano | Bisceglie, Italy | Leonardo Da Vinci | Sprint Freestyle

Prep: Swam for Raffaele Girardi at Circolo Canottieri Aniene... Placed second in the 50-meter freestyle and third in the 100-meter freestyle at Italian Championships as well as Italian Youth Championships in 2019… Also placed third in the 50-meter freestyle at Italian Championships.

Personal: Daughter of Cosmai Maria and Nicola Napoletano… Has one brother, Gianluca.

Natalie Neugent | Wichita, Kansas | Andover | Sprint Freestyle

Prep: A four-year letterwinner under Bethany Bastian at Andover High School… State Champion in the 50 and 100 free and three-time first-team All-State selection… A three-time Wichita All-Metro selection… Competed under Mitchell Wagner at Wichita Swim Club… Earned Summa Cum Laude academic honors, the President's Award for Academic Excellence, was a Kansas State Scholar and completed the Kansas Scholars Curriculum.

Personal: Daughter of Michelle and Ron Neugent… Has one brother, Luke… Father swam at SMU and Kansas and was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team.

Sophia Rivas | Leander, Texas | Rouse | Sprint Freestyle

Prep: Lettered under Savannah Robinson at Rouse High School… Named team MVP… Member of the National Honor Society and the Honors college… Also competed for Ian Crocker at Whitecaps of Westlake.

Personal: Daughter of Ana Moran-Rivas and Felix Rivas… Has two brothers, Joshua and Aaron.

Carlotta Scarpitti | Rome, Italy | San Giuseppe del Caburlotto | IM/Butterfly

Prep: Swam for Ivano Cioccoloni at G Sport Village… Italian and International Youth Championships winner… Member of the National Team.

Personal: Daughter of Marco Scarpitti.

Kirsten Schlortt | San Antonio, Texas | Saint Mary's Hall | Backstroke

Prep: A four-year letterwinner under Brittany Wallace at Saint Mary's Hall… Two-time TAPPS State Champion in the 100 free and 100 back… TAPPS Region runner-up in the 100 back… TAPPS State High-Point Runner-Up… TISCA 200 back Champion… Two-Time TISCA 200 free Champion… Posted the fastest girls' 200 free in San Antonio… Named City of San Antonio Number One Girl Swimmer Runner-Up by the San Antonio Express News… Team Captain… Swam for Luke Shaw at Streamline Aquatics... Competed on the national level at Futures earning NCSA cuts… Earned the Math Honors Award… Garnered the National Charity League Star Award six straight years.

Personal: Daughter of Sandra and Robert Schlortt.

Caroline Sullivan | Austin, Texas | St. Andrews Episcopal School | Breaststroke

Prep: Was a four-year letterwinner for Felix Gonzalez at St. Andrews Episcopal School… Named Most Valuable Swimmer… Also swam for Ian Crocker at Whitecaps of Westlake… Graduated Magna Cum Laude… Was TPSMEA Choir first chair… Also lettered in volleyball.

Personal: Daughter of Elizabeth and Bill Sullivan… Has one brother, Ben… Father played football at Vanderbilt (1995) and grandfather played for the Detroit Lions (1963-67)… Mother and grandmother are SMU graduates.
