DALLAS (SMU) – First year head coach Chase Graham announced the 2024 schedule for SMU Rowing on Friday. Coming off their best NCAA finish in program history, the Mustangs' 2024 schedule features five regular season competitions before two postseason events.
"We are excited about the spring schedule, the competition we will face will help prepare us for championship racing in May," said Graham. "While we are excited about the opportunities the race schedule will offer, our focus right now is improving our fitness and working hard together. So we are spending a lot of time in the boat and in the weight room. I'm really proud of how this group has come together and look forward to seeing how fast we can go this spring."
The season starts with a meeting against Iowa in Waco on March 15. Iowa finished 5th in the Big 10 in 2023.
The Mustangs compete at home at White Rock Lake on March 23 against Texas. Texas and SMU meet again on March 24. Texas is the reigning Big 12 Champion and finished fourth in the nation at the NCAA Championship.
After Texas, the Mustangs hit the road to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic, one of the premier events on the rowing calendar. The event is slated for April 5-7.
The Mustangs return to the Big Ten Invite, April 18-20 in Sarasota, Florida. SMU competed at the Big Ten Invite in 2023 winning a total of six races across the two days of competition.
Next up, the Mustangs look to defend their title at the American Athletic Conference Rowing Championship (May 12). Last season, the Mustangs swept every race for a dominant 28-point victory, scoring 168 total points. Five Mustangs were selected first team all-conference.
The NCAA Championship follows the AACs with the Mustangs coming off a ninth-place finish there in 2023, the best ever by an AAC squad. The Mustangs qualified all three boats for the petite finals for the first time in program history. The varsity eight won the petite final to place seventh nationally, a record setting performance for SMU. The varsity four placed 10th overall and the second varsity 8 finished 11th. The 2024 NCAA Rowing Championships are slated for May 31-June 2 in Bethel, Ohio.
The Mustangs and first year head coach Chase Graham have begun the prep for the new season which begins March 15.
