DALLAS (SMU) - Kayla Schefke has signed with SMU women's tennis for the 2024-25 season, Head Coach Jeff Nevolo announced on Wednesday.

Schefke, coming to the Hilltop as an incoming freshman, is a Metroplex native from McKinney. She hails to the Hilltop as a five-star recruit, ranked 34th nationally, second regionally and second in her home state of Texas.

Nevolo said he is excited to welcome a Dallas native to his roster.

"We're thrilled to have Kayla joining us and staying home in the metroplex," Nevolo said. "Kayla does so many things well on the tennis court and we believe all of those skills will make her a great college tennis player. "She is someone we knew we wanted to be a Mustang very early in the process. With each interaction we felt extremely confident she was the right type of person for us and we can't wait to get started with her."

Schefke trained at the Brookhaven Tennis Academy under coach David Anderson. She has international experience traveling to various countries including Costa Rica and Spain playing International Tennis Federation tournaments.

SMU won the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Entering the 2023-24 season, SMU is ranked fifth in the Texas Region by the ITA — along with Hadley Doyle and Taylor Johnson being ranked in the top 20 individually for the region.
