DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team inked three newcomers that will join the program for the 2024 spring season.
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of three very established American juniors in
Trevor Svajda,
Kale Mize and
Hughes Peus," said reigning AAC Coach of the Year
Grant Chen. "All have had extensive success and are a great fit for our program."
Svajda – the nation's No. 1 overall recruit – and Mize join the Mustangs as five-star recruits, with Peus bringing Team USA competition experience to the Hilltop.
SMU and its newcomers look to build on the sustained success of the program, which includes winning the last two American Athletic Conference Tournament Championships to earn NCAA Tournament berths in 2022 and 2023.
The Mustangs open the spring season in Manoa, Hawaii to take on the University of Hawaii on Jan. 8.
Trevor Svajda | San Diego, CA / Connections Academy
Trevor Svajda joins the Mustangs ranked as the No. 1 player in the country. Svajda was a finalist at the 2023 USTA 18's Boys Nationals in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to earn a wild card into US Open Qualifying Rounds. Svajda is also an ITF Grade Five Champion, and trains under former ATP pro Matt Hanlin. Svajda plans to study sport management at SMU.
Chen on Svajda:
"It is very exciting to sign the number one recruit in the country and USTA Boys National Finalist. Trevor comes from a tennis family and will forge his own path in his tennis career. He has played on the biggest stage, competing in the US Open this past August. He has so many intangibles and we look forward to seeing him compete on the Hilltop."
Kale Mize | Tulsa, OK / Mizzou Online
Kale Mize comes to the Hilltop as a five-star recruit. Mize won multiple Level 2 Championships nationwide, and was a Wilson and Adidas team member throughout his high school career. Mize plans to study business at SMU.
Chen on Mize:
"Kale is a very natural fit for our squad. His positive energy, athleticism and potential were all key factors in targeting him. We have always looked to target recruits in our backyard, and Kale is just a few hours north in Tulsa. He has been training under the well-renowned Tucker Academy."
Hughes Peus | Palos Verdes Estates, CA / Leeway Academy
Hughes Peus comes to SMU with a UTR rating of 10.2 and Texas Tech ITA champion. Peus also competed with Team USA's U14 team in Japan, winning both the singles and team events. Peus plans to study finance at SMU.
Chen on Peus:
"Growing up in the same town, I have known Hughes and the Peus family since he was very young. Hughes has had so much international success early on as one of the top twelve and fourteen under juniors in the world. His best tennis is ahead, and I know he will thrive in our program."
