INDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/SMU) – Luana Alonso has been selected to compete at the 2023 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, the NCAA announced today. The event will be held March 15-18 at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.

This will be Alonso's second trip to the Championships, having qualified as a freshman while at Virginia Tech last season. She competed in the 100-yard butterfly, placing 30th in prelims with a time of 52.29.

Alonso earned her 2023 invite in the 100 fly, with the opportunity to also swim the 200 distance having achieved an NCAA B Standard.

The sophomore posted career best times in both the 100 fly (52.08) and 200 fly (1:56.63) as a Mustang this season, ranking her fourth on each of SMU's all-time top performer lists in the events. She earned runner-up honors in both races at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships to secure all-conference accolades, and was also on SMU's 200 free relay championship squad. Additionally, she earned all-league nods in the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

In addition to her collegiate success, Alonso also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for Paraguay, placing 28th in 100m butterfly heats.

Mustang diver Nicole Stambo has qualified for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships March 7-9 with the opportunity to join Alonso in Knoxville pending qualification.
