DALLAS- SMU men's tennis came up short in 4-1 loss to No. 37 San Diego Wednesday afternoon at the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex.
In a matchup that was not shy of energy, the Mustangs fell behind early after dropping the doubles point and the Toreros would go on to win three singles matches to secure the win.
In doubles play,
Julian Steinhausen and
Kyle Sillman got the Mustangs off to a hot start with their first win together as a pair on Court 2, 6-3. Soon after,
Adam Neff and
Pranav Kumar fell on Court 1 to the reigning West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week of Iiro Vasa and Sacchitt Sharma, 6-4. San Diego managed to secure the doubles point after a 6-3 victory over
Liam Krall and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo. The duo is now 7-3 throughout the season.
Julian Steinhausen got the Mustangs on the board with the first singles victory of the day and his fifth victory of the season. Steinhausen managed to break serve at 5-5 in the first set and later won 7-5. He never relinquished on his way to a 6-0 second set win.
Despite facing multiple deuce points,
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo fell on Court 4, 6-4, 6-3 putting San Diego back in the lead.
San Diego upped the ante with a 3-1 lead when SMU's
Liam Krall fell on Court 2, 7-5, 6-0 to the Western Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week (1/24), Oliver Tarvet.
Pranav Kumar lost his opening set, but found momentum in the second which he won 6-3. Kumar could not find a break in the deciding third set and fell 6-1 resulting in San Diego clinching the dual.
Adam Neff and
Louis Cloud's matches were left unfinished after both splitting sets. Neff was up a break in the third serving 3-2 against the No. 104 ITA ranked singles player and former Western Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week (2/7) of Iiro Vasa. Cloud had just begun the first game of the third set.
This is the first loss of the season for the Mustangs at home.
The Mustangs will have one day off before hosting a doubleheader against Southern Arkansas at 11 a.m. and No. 21 Cornell at 5 p.m. on Mar. 10 at the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex.
