ORLANDO (SMU)- No. 52 SMU men's tennis closed out the regular season with a 4-0 sweep over No. 60 Florida Atlantic on Monday afternoon.
The Mustangs notched their sixth ranked win and second road win in a row after a 4-2 win over No. 59 Rice on Apr. 15.
SMU took the 1-0 lead by snatching the doubles point as courts 1 and 2 secured the point.
Liam Krall,
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo and
Adam Neff clinched the match with victories on courts 1 through 3 in singles play.
"Another step in the right direction. The boys are peaking at the right time. FAU is a well-coached team. Our guys executed well," said head coach
Grant Chen. "We are excited to be at National Tennis Campus and preparing for American Athletic Conference Championships. Thank you to Coach Nevolo and entire women's tennis team for their support today. It is extra special when we are at the same venue and can root each other on."
The dynamic duo of
Adam Neff and
Pranav Kumar returned to action on Court 1 where they captured the first win of the day with a prompt 6-3 victory over Kevin Kuempfner and Nicolas Acevedo.
Liam Krall and
Callaway Clark followed up the victory from Court 1 with a 6-3 victory of their own over Filip Krolo and Joao Graca giving SMU the 1-0 lead.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo and
Julian Steinhausen were up 4-3 against Hunter Robbins and Finn Stodder before play was halted.
The Mustangs continued to roll over the Owls in singles play as SMU captured the next three matches clinching the win.
Liam Krall was the first off, the court as he staved off Acevedo 6-3 in the opening set. It was all Krall in the second-and-final set as the junior rolled to a 6-1 set victory. Krall is on a two-match win streak as he improves to 11-7 in dual matches this season.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo added to SMU's lead with a straight set victory on Court 3. Muniz-Hidalgo took the opening set 6-3 then hung a 6-0 bagel over Graca in the second set to get the win.
Adam Neff got his 12
th straight win in the match-clincher over No. 60 Florida Atlantic. Neff and Heumpfner went back-and-forth in the first eight games of the opening set. Neff got the big break and hold of serve to take the opening set 6-4. It was a similar tale in the second set as Neff acquired the big break and hold of serve to take the second set 6-4.
Neff improves to 14-2 in dual matches this season as he clinched the win.
SMU will remain in Orlando, Fla. where the Mustangs will compete for back-to-back conference titles in the AAC Tournament.
