Long Jumper Raelyn Roberson will make her nationals debut after qualifying at the NCAA West Preliminary Round this weekend. Roberson placed 11th among the field with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships. She jumped 6.17 meters – her best this season.
"I felt so loved and supported this weekend," Roberson said. "I had a great time, and I'm happy with my performance. I can't wait to see what I can put together at nationals!"
Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said Roberson's first two jumps put her in position to qualify, and she went for it on the third jump, which ended with a foul. However, her first jumps were good enough to get her in.
"Ultimately, Raelyn is headed to the NCAA Championships due to her consistency in the first two jumps," Haynes said.
Hedda Kvalvag and Maykayla Jackson made their debut at the preliminary round in the triple jump. Kvalvag walked away with a mark of 12.73 meters – her best this season – and a 25th place finish. Jackson jumped 11.89 meters for 47th.
Kaitlyn Gearin also made her first appearance at the preliminary round in the 5k and placed 43rd with a time of 16:45.46.
"Maykayla, Hedda, and Kaitlyn all had a great year and put themselves into a new realm of possibility by making it to the NCAA First Round as first and second year athletes," Haynes said. "The future is bright for them and this team."
The long jump final will take place at the NCAA Championships in Austin on June 8.
