DALLAS (SMU) - No. 2 SMU returned to Washburne Stadium with a 1-1 tie against Grand Canyon on Sept. 27, featuring late game heroics from Hermann Trophy Watch List Member Jelldrik Dallmann. This marked the Mustangs return to home after winning their second conference game of the season on the road over USF.

In the 80th minute, Dallmann took his opportunity off of a deflection from a GCU defender, sailing the ball right over Grand Canyon Goalkeeper Leon Schmidt's head putting the Mustangs (7-1-1) within reach.

This is the graduate student's seventh goal of the season, including a hat trick scored against Central Arkansas.

"I'm happy we showed some resilience in the second half and came back," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "There's always a different level of anxiety when it's college soccer and you're watching that clock countdown. For Jelldrik to find the goal was important — we created enough chances to find that goal."

The comeback followed a goal from Grand Canyon's forward Solo Bidanessy just 12 minutes into the match, assisted by Grand Canyon's leading scorer Bright Nutomutsi from just outside of the box.

Despite the draw, SMU maintained 59% possession throughout the game.

The Mustangs now boast a 15-1-2 record at home in Washburne Stadium since the start of last season. This is the best home start for the Mustangs since 2019 when they started 6-0.

Cole Johnson, a senior, started and played the full time in goal. The reigning three-time AAC Goalkeeper of the Week recorded one save against GCU (5-3-1) — avoiding a loss for the sixth straight time.

The Mustangs outshot GCU 15-7 at full time, and had eight shots on the Antelope's one in the first half. Dallmann led the way in shots for the Mustangs with four — three of which were on target — with forward Bailey Sparks and defender Kyran Chambron Pinho following with two each.

"It leaves you wanting more. We'll turn the page quickly," Hudson said. "We'll refocus, we'll learn. We will get back to business and come ready to play better next Wednesday."

This marks the Mustangs' final non-conference game of the season, with SMU returning to conference play to host Charlotte on Wednesday, Oct. 4 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
