DALLAS (SMU)- The No. 3 SMU equestrian team defeated No. 8 Delaware State 15-4 on Friday afternoon at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
"It was great to begin our spring season with a win," said Head Coach
Carol Gwin. "We are excited to be back in the swing of competition and work towards nationals."
SMU's win marks its fourth ranked win of the season and ninth consecutive win at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
Augusta Iwasaki (Fences),
Elli Yeager (Flat) and
Nya Kearns (Horsemanship) all earned Most Outstanding Performer (MOP). The Mustangs have now been awarded at least three MOPs in five consecutive meets.
The meet started with Fences and Horsemanship occurring simultaneously. The Mustangs dominated Horsemanship by a 4-1 margin, beginning with a 78-73 victory from Kearns.
Alexa Black picked up a dominant 76-69 victory over DSU's Kersten Zehner, and
Lily Anderson won her point 76.5-76. Freshman
Jayna Lagace defeated Alexis Grogan 75-74 to finish the action in Horsemanship.
SMU picked up a 3-2 victory in Fences, led by a dominant showing from Iwasaki. The sophomore defeated DSU's Megan Pratt 88-68.
Hensley Humphries won her ride by an 82-75 margin, and
Elli Yeager took down Olivia Brown 87-84.
The second half of the meet saw Flat and Reining coincide.
The Mustangs kicked off the second half with a 5-0 sweep on the Flat.
Hensley Humphries scored the first point for SMU, posting an 81 to defeat Victoria Croston.
Emma Engel followed with a 78-74 win against Miranda McCarthy.
Katy Merchant took a 76-70 victory over Megan Pratt, with Yeager securing SMU's win with a dominant 84 score against Grace Magnum's 74.
Taylor Madden capped off the Mustangs' Flat sweep with her 84-77 victory over Olivia Brown.
SMU entered the second half of Reining with a 12-3 lead.
Taylor Zimmerman got SMU started with a 72.5, defeating Claire Andrews by one point.
Maria Richards also scored, defeating Ella Estus 72.5-69.5.
Lily Anderson scored the final point of the afternoon with a 72.5-71.5 victory over Anastasia Brugger.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday against South Dakota State at the Dallas Equestrian Center. Saturday's meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
