OKLAHOMA CITY (SMU) –
Will Sides won the individual title while SMU men's golf earned a spot in Wednesday's match play final with a second-place finish in the stroke play portion of the Jackson T Stephen's Cup.
Sides started the day in second place and remained in contention throughout a strong day. He came into the final hole of the day needing a par to force an individual playoff and also help push the Mustangs into the final of team match play. Sides would sink a clutch 12-foot putt to move on to the playoff. In the playoff, after his opponent missed the green, Sides put his approach shot within six feet. Sides would eventually have two putts to win but would only need one as he drained his six-footer to take the individual title. This marks back-to-back appearances with a individual title for the Mustangs.
As a team, the Mustangs entered the day in first place at nine-over par. They put together a strong one-under par round. Thanks to Sides par putt on the final hole, the Mustangs advanced to the final by one stroke over San Diego State who held the tiebreaker. They face Oklahoma State on Wednesday for a chance to win the team title.
Zachary Kingsland shot three-over on the final day to finish in a tie for eighth. He played bogey free through the first 16 holes of his round. Kingsland pair his top 10 finish with his title last time out at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
J. Holland Humphries played a huge role in the Mustangs earning a spot in the final with his one-under final day. He shot a 69 with three birdies.
Matthew Foster shot a 72 starting his day with a birdie. He finished in a tie for 23
rd.
Enrique Dimayuga carded a 73 to finish in a tie for 15
th.
The Mustangs return to the course for Wednesday's final. At the 2023 edition of the Stephens Cup, the Mustangs won a third-place match play matchup against LSU.
