// MUSTANGS HEAD TO THE DESERT FOR BRIANN JANUARY CLASSIC
The SMU women's basketball program continues its inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by heading to Tempe, Ariz. to face Arizona State (Nov. 16) and Minnesota (Nov. 17) this weekend in the Briann January Classic.  

The Briann January Classic is a multi-team event hosted by Arizona State. SMU, Minnesota and Oregon State will all be making the trip to Tempe to compete in the third edition of the annual event as each team will play two games over the weekend.
The classic will be SMU's first road trip of the season and begins its weekend taking on ASU at 4:30 pm CT on ESPN+. The Mustangs are 12-22 on the road under head coach Toyelle Wilson.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, SMU concludes its road trip squaring off against Minnesota at 1 p.m. CT. It will mark the Mustangs first neutral site contest of the season as SMU is 3-6 in neutral site game under Wilson. SMU's last neutral site win was against Gardner-Webb (84-71) on Dec. 3, 2022, as part of the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational.

Sunday's game will not be stream but fans can listen to both games by tuning into the SMU Mobile App for the radio broadcast.

Entering the weekend, SMU is 2-1 (0-0 ACC) overall and is coming off a dominate 72-44 win at home over Western Michigan last time out. SMU is 24-15 in non-conference games under Wilson and have won five of their last six non-conference games dating back to last season.

Saturday's game will be the fourth overall meeting between SMU and ASU and the first time since 2015. ASU has won the past two meetings. The last time the two teams played in Tempe, ASU won 77-42 in 2014.

Sunday's game will be the second overall meeting between SMU and Minnesota and the since 2014. Last time the two faced each other Minnesota defeated SMU 77-70 in the second round of the 2014 WNIT in Minneapolis. It will be the first time the two teams have played each other on a neutral site.

SMU is in its fourth season under head coach Toyelle Wilson. The Mustangs are 47-45 under Wilson and have made the WNIT twice during her tenure.  She holds a career record of 102-68 in seven seasons of head coaching.

// SECOND CHANCE OPPORTUNITIES
The Mustangs collected over 15 offensive rebounds in their first three games this season including 20 and 22 in their first two games. Last season SMU had only two games with 20 or more offensive rebounds. SMU currently ranks 10th in the NCAA and first in the ACC in offensive rebounds averaging 19.7 a game.

Jessica Peterson has lead  the charge on collecting rebounds as she has averaged a double-double (10 rpg – 10.3 ppg) though the first three games. She has grabbed 30 rebounds this season which ranks fourth in the ACC.

// A WALKING BUCKET
Nya Robertson has had a strong start to the season as she currently averages 22 ppg through her first three games. Her scoring average ranks third in the ACC and 25th in the NCAA.

Robertson has showcased her shooting ability though the first three games as she ranks fourth in the country and first in the ACC in three-point attempts with 31 as she averages 3.33 three-pointers made per game this season, which ranks third in the ACC. Her 10 made three pointers this season also ranks 20th in the nation. Robertson also leads the ACC in field goal attempts with 56.  

Last time out she scored 16 points and made three from beyond the arc. It marked her 11th straight game scoring in double digits dating back to season and has reached double figures in 45 games in her career.

Against Old Dominion, she scored a season high 29 points were also the most points by a Mustang inside Moody Coliseum since Kayla White scored 34 against East Carolina on Jan. 13, 2022.

// HARD EARNED POINTS
Chantae Embry had a career day at the foul line against ODU as she made 10 of her 11 foul shots, both were career highs. She followed that performance up by going a perfect 7-of-7 from the line against Western Michigan. Embry has made her last nine consecutive foul shot attempts.

This season she is 18-of-19 from the line and ranks second in the ACC and 14th in the NCAA in made foul shots. Her foul line percentage of 94.7 also ranks fourth in the ACC.

Her 10 free throws made against ODU were the most made by a Mustang since Tiara Young went 18-22 from the stripe against Memphis last season on Jan. 1, 2024.

Embry scored a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds against ODU. She currently ranks second on the team in both points and rebounds (13.3 ppg / 7.7 rpg).

// DEFENSE LEADS SMU VICTORY
The Mustang's defensive abilities were on full display against Western Michigan as the team forced 33 turnovers and tallied 18 steals. The 33 turnovers forced are tied for the second most forced in a game in program history (33 vs Georgia, 11/25/95) and were the most forced since the team set the program record of 35 against San Jose State (1/15/00).

The 18 steals were the most in a game under Wilson and the most for the Mustangs since 2019. TK Pitts ended the game with a career high six steals as she also tallied a career high five assists.
