Post-Game Press Conference
DALLAS (SMU) – Guard
Nya Robertson led all scorers with 29 points as the SMU women's basketball team fell 79-70 to Old Dominion on Saturday inside Moody Coliseum.
It was a closely contested game as SMU held a one-point advantage at the half, but ODU used 20 offensive rebounds and scored 40 points in the second half while holding SMU to 33.3% shooting during the game to best the Mustangs.
Robertson scored her season high point total shooting 9-19 from the floor and knocking down five three-pointers. She has now tailed 50 points over the first two games this season. Robertson scored 18 of her 29 points in the first half and went 6-8 from the line.
Her 29 points are also the most points by a Mustang inside Moody Coliseum since Kayla White scored 34 against East Carolina on Jan. 13, 2022.
Forward
Chantae Embry finished the game with 18 points and eight rebounds. She went 10-11 from the line and also made an impact on the defensive end with two blocks and two steals. Early in the first quarter she eclipsed 800 career points scored.
Center
Jessica Peterson recorded double-digit rebounds for the second straight game collecting 11 and added eight points. Guard
Ella Brow led the team in assists with five as she added eight points going 4-of-8 from the field.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SMU began the game on fire knocking down their first four shots and took a 9-0 lead to begin the game.
ODU responded with a 12-0 run of their own before
Chantae Embry answered with a tough and-1 finish. ODU lead at the end of the first 17-16. Both Embry and Robertson had seven points in the first quarter.
Both team traded buckets back and forth to begin the second as
Kylie Marshall drained her first three-pointer of the game.
The pace of the game would slowed down until the Robertson showcased her range hitting three consecutive three-pointers towards the end of the quarter. She ended the first half with 18 points going 4-of-7 from behind the arc as SMU held a 40-39 lead through two quarters.
SMU once against started strong in the third quarter scoring six string points to begin the period. The lead continued to switch hands throughout the third as Embry went 5-of-6 from the line in the period. ODU was able to grab control of the lead late in the quarter and end the third with a 59-55 lead.
A driving lay up from
Ella Brow got the Mustangs with in four at the start of the fourth, but ODU responded with multiple buckets including back to back three-pointers that pushed the lead to 11 with five minutes left in the game.
A late three pointer from Robertson brought the lead back down to single digits, but ODU held on for the victory.
