Final Game BookÂ
DENTON, Texas (SMU) â Â Center
Jessica Peterson and forward
Chantae Embry both posted double-doubles as the SMU women's basketball program defeated the North Texas Mean Green 74-66 in the team's first game of the Evan Moore Classic on Thursday.
SMU started fast and jumped out to an early double-digit lead and led by as much as 19 at the start of the second half. UNT roared back over the final two quarters and tied the game with 4:42 left on the clock. Sparked by a Peterson and-one finish, the Mustangs outscored UNT 13-7 over the final four minutes to secure a victory over their once-conference foe in Denton for the first time since 2013.
Peterson ended her night with 19 rebounds and 13 points for her sixth double-double of the season, while Embry recorded her first double-double of the year and the ninth of her career, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first time since the 2022-23 season that SMU had two players record double in the same game (Embry / Savannah Wilkinson vs Houston 1/23/23).
The Mustangs had everything clicking early as guard
TK Pitts scored 11, converting two and-one layups, and guard
Nya Robertson had eight points in the first as SMU led 22-11 at the end of the first, the second most points by the Mustangs in the first quarter this season. Â
The Mustangs continued to score at an efficient rate in the second quarter. SMU shot 52% from the floor in the first half as Pitts led all scorers with a season high 13 on 4-of-6 shooting while Robertson had 10 and Peterson recorded 10 boards. SMU led 38-21 at the break.
Robertson reached 20 points for the sixth time this season as she had 21 points on 6-18 shooting. Eleven of those points came in the second half, including a dagger three-pointer to help secure the win.
Guard
Donavia Hall had arguably her best defensive game of the season as she had two blocks and drew a charge in the final 90 seconds of the game to negate another UNT comeback and seal the victory for SMU.
SMU has now won two games in a row and earned its first road win of the season as the team improved to 7-5 (0-1 ACC) overall, while North Texas fell to 7-4 (0-0 AAC).
