Georgiev Signs For SMU Men’s Tennis

DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis Head Coach Grant Chen announced the signing of Georgi Georgiev to his squad on Monday. Georgiev will join SMU's squad in January.

Georgiev comes to the Hilltop from Svilengrad, Bulgaria. He is an eight-time Bulgarian national champion, multiple-time national team member for the European Championships and the No. 113-ranked junior player in the ITF.

"While Georgi will only start with us in January, it feels like he's already been in the team all year," said Chen. "I'm so pleased with the recruiting process that we went through to find a student-athlete who will fit with the culture of the program."

Currently ranked 1610th in the ATP world singles rankings with a 12.5 World Tennis Number rating, Georgiev earned his first ATP point at the Sofia ITF M25 last August. He is also ranked 564th in the ATP doubles rankings after reaching the final round of the Antalya M25 doubles tournament in November.

"(Georgiev) will be an impact player with his well-rounded game and strong competitive mindset," said Chen. "He comes from a wonderful family who value education and is a standout tennis player."

Georgiev trained under Dimitar Dimitrov at Tennis Club Haskovo and will study economics at SMU.

"Signing with SMU is not just a commitment to a team—it's a promise to push boundaries, compete with passion, and leave a legacy of excellence on and off the court," said Georgiev.

"I'm proud to join the Mustang family and want to thank Coach Chen and my family for support."

The Mustangs will begin their inaugural ACC season at the Manoa Classic, Jan. 4.
