Behind The Player: Nya Robertson

DALLAS (SMU)—
In her short time on the Hilltop, guard Nya Robertson has already made quite the impact on the SMU women's basketball program.

The Fort Worth native has been turning heads all season long, averaging 20 points a game after spending the last two years at George Washington.

"After entering the transfer portal and talking to coach Wilson and the rest of the staff, they said I was going to have a good impact on this team," Robertson said. "My teammates help me to be the person that I am on and off the court. They help me a lot and have put their trust in me to do what I do."

That trust has allowed Robertson to flourish in the SMU offense. Robertson has scored over 20 points in five games this season, including scoring 29 points twice this season. She has also scored double figures in all 13 games this year.

Not only has Robertson been leading by example, but she is also emerging as a leader in the locker room, one of the goals she had in mind when making the decision to come to SMU.

"I wanted to be the leader that I always wanted to be," Robertson said.  "I want to help my teammates on and off the court, being that positive person. I always come to the gym looking forward to playing, being that spark that helps my teammates."

Earlier this season, the junior eclipsed 1,000 career points and was able to achieve the feat in front of her entire family, who she has credited with helping her get where she is today.

"It meant a lot being able to see them when I score, jumping up and down," Robertson said. "It just makes me happy to see them because I didn't have that over the last two years."

As Robertson has taken her game to the next level, she has also elevated the play of others including Jessica Peterson, who is third in the NCAA in rebounds per game (12.3) and Chantae Embry who is second on the team in both rebounds (7.3) and scoring (12.6 ppg).

There is a lot of depth on this team," Robertson said. "One through 13, if players are out, they are still contributing on the court. With all five on the court, you can't just stop one of us, you have to stop all five. The depth is really strong, coaching-wise too."

The Mustangs couldn't have picked a better time to begin clicking as a team, as SMU hosts Stanford on Thursday in its ACC home opener. The team enters the game on a three-game winning streak and is first in the conference in offensive rebounds per game. Robertson is third in the conference in scoring, while Peterson leads the ACC in rebounding, and Embry is first in the conference in free throw percentage (88.9).
